Apple Finally Kills Off the SE Line: Meet the iPhone 16e

Perhaps it had to end at some point – Apple has finally (and discreetly) discontinued its more affordable SE line, replacing it with the newer iPhone 16e which was introduced today. As of now, you’ll no longer be able to purchase the iPhone SE 3rd Generation directly from Apple, and folks looking to buy one will have to go through third-party retailers.

We can’t imagine why you’d want the older model though – unless you’re someone who really wants a small phone or needs a Touch ID-enabled iPhone, the 16e offers much better hardware, although the $599 price tag is a bit steep, especially when you consider the omissions on this year’s “wallet-friendly” Apple handset.

Let’s take a look at the pros first – there’s now a full-screen display (albeit with a notch), USB-C support, Apple’s customizable Action Button, 8GB of RAM, and the highly-impressive A18 chipset. The phone also features the Apple C1 chip, a first-party modem which Apple says contributes to the 16e’s improved battery performance. In fact, Apple goes so far as to say that it can last 10 hours when compared to the iPhone 16.

For 600 bucks though, the 16e still comes with a 60Hz refresh rate, older WiFi 6 connectivity, and it doesn’t even feature Apple’s own MagSafe charging technology, reminding you that this is very much a base-model iPhone. However if you’re coming from a much older iPhone and don’t really need all the bells and whistles, then this might be the device for you.
