Though the first chapter of Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects animated series is about to wrap up this Sunday, the story isn’t over yet.
Today, Adult Swim announced that Common Side Effects has been renewed for a second season that will continue the story of a man trying to save the world (and upend big pharma) with a strange mushroom that can cure any illness. Adult Swim has yet to share a projected release window for the new season. In a statement about the renewal, series co-creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely thanked Adult Swim for believing in their vision.
“The opportunity to push the boundaries of animation and storytelling on Adult Swim is like a wonderful mushroom dream,” the duo said. “Our goal with the show is to transform planet Earth and restore the human spirit. For now, we will settle for a second season.”
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen commended Bennett and Hely for “crafting a boundary-pushing and genre-defining piece of television that re-frames what ‘adult animation’ is capable of,” and pointed to the show’s online engagement as one of the signs of its success.
“You all did your job by showing up on Adult Swim and Max to support the show and lighting up your socials to spread the word,” Ouweleen said. “So, see? We can have nice things.”
