Google Finally Unveils the Pixel 9a: Here’s What You need to Know!

Another year another new Pixel – well actually, the Pixel 9a is only one of several new Pixel models for 2025, if you count the still-unannounced Pixel 10 series. In any case, Google’s latest midrange smartphone is here, and it packs quite a lot of new tricks up its sleeve.

As such, there’s a lot that the Pixel 9a brings over from last year’s flagship Pixel 9 model – perhaps the biggest upgrade is the Tensor G4 chipset, which features some upgrades over general performance, battery and thermals compared to the Tensor G3 (albeit not by much). The pOLED display also climbs up to 6.3 inches, with up to 2,700 nits of peak brightness, a 1080 x 2424 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

Available in four colours including Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris and Peony, the Pixel 9a also features a flatter rear panel that ditches the signature camera bar, which was previously a mainstay design on previous Pixel models. This whole design comes with IP68 dust and water resistance, although Google has stuck with Gorilla Glass 3 for the display.

There’s also a larger battery this time around, with a 5,100 mAh capacity cell powering the device; charging is still slow at 23W however. RAM stays at 8GB as well with 128GB of base storage, although users can now opt for a slightly more spacious 256GB of storage if they need to. For cameras, Google has moved away from the 64MP sensors that it used for the Pixel 7a and 8a – this time around, we’re getting a 48MP main sensor, accompanied by a 13 ultra-wide camera; there’s a 13Mp sensor as well on the front.

For software, the phone is launching with Android 15 onboard, and Google says that it will provide seven years of software updates – you also get a ton of Google’s AI apps including Gemini, and other signature Pixel features like Call Screening, Spam Protection, and more. As for price, the Pixel 9a will start at $499, essentially the same as the Pixel 8a when it launched last year.

As for availability, Google will officially sell the Pixel 9a in more markets this time around – the phone will be available in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland, France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Australia, Japan, India, Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
