Nothing Teases Camera Upgrades with the Phone 3a

We’ve seen a lot of teasing from Nothing with regards to the upcoming Phone 3a, which is expected to arrive later in March. From what we can tell so far, it looks like Nothing is positioning the Phone 3a as a camera-focused midrange device in its smartphone lineup, with photo-centric features such as a dedicated camera button added in the mix.

With that said, Nothing recently announced that the Phone 3a will feature a “pro-level” camera system which it claims will be able to capture “true-to-life” photos and videos in any environment, a bold claim if we’ve ever heard one. Part of this camera system includes a 50MP periscope lens with 3x optical zoom, 6x in-sensor zoom, and 60x ultra zoom, and 70 mm portrait-perfect focal length.

The Phone 3a will also feature a 50MP main sensor that can capture as much as up to 64% more light versus what’s on the 2a right now. Nothing says that it’s also been working on its TrueLens Engine 3.0 that combines that 3a’s hardware with computational photography to get good-looking photos, at least on paper.

This involves AI-based tone mapping and scene detection, although of course we’re still waiting to see this in action “IRL.” Users can also expect Ultra HDR photos on all four sensors, with 4K video recording on the main and front cameras. With that in mind, it looks like Nothing’s promising some pretty big things with the Phone 3a, although there’s still the whole other matter of delivering upon said promises.
