Today's Wordle answer (game #1351) is… HOVER.
While yesterday's game served up an uncommon challenge in the form of a repeated Z, today's is much more familiar: it's an ER word.
It's only slightly easier, though, with an average score of 4.7 indicating that it's keeping people on their toes. That V in the middle will not have helped – as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, it's the fifth least common letter in the game.
But the difficulty of finding a V is nothing compared to that created by the ER ending, which is simply so numerous that it makes it near-impossible to narrow down the options.
Most of the best Wordle start words were a bust today; none of the top 20 dipped below 100 possible solutions. Instead, this became a rare day in which my randomly chosen opener outperformed the big guns. ROWDY would be no better than decent in a normal day, but here it gave me a green O and yellow R that immediately pointed me towards that ER format.
I went with SANER, reasoning that there was no need to include the O again and that I'd be better off gaining info about another letter, just in case it wasn't an ER word. But it was: the E and R turned green, the S, A and N were ruled out, and I now had a dozen words to pick from.
Somehow, I came up with all of them: VOTER, MOPER, HOVER, GOFER, COVER, LOVER, MOVER, POKER, JOKER, BOXER, CORER and HOMER. But I knew that several had been past Wordle answers, and without needing to look at a list – POKER, JOKER, BOXER, CORER and HOMER were all obvious repeats simply because they were so memorable as difficult answers.
That left me with seven genuine options, then – although really it only left four, because I realized afterwards that VOTER, COVER and LOVER had also all been past answers.
I didn't know that at the time of course, and instead played CHIMP in order to give me the best shot at a four. When then H turned yellow that left HOVER as the only solution, so I escaped with a four. And better still, WordleBot had to settle for a five. Nice!

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1350)
In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1350, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

F is a very common starting letter in Wordle. It ranks seventh behind only S, C, B, T, P and A and overall there are 135 solutions that begin with this letter.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.
- The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was Y.
Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1350) was… FUZZY.
You don't have to look at FUZZY for long to see why it might be a difficult Wordle: not only does it have a repeated letter… but the letter in question is a Z. How unfair is that!
To that you can add the fact that this format with a U, a couple of consonants, and then a Y, is itself pretty common – meaning narrowing down the options won't have been easy.
There are in fact 58 words that have the -U--Y format, of which 25 fill those middle two letters with a repeat.
We've had 12 before today: BUGGY, GULLY, MUMMY, RUDDY, HURRY, GUPPY, BULLY, FUNNY, GUMMY, BUDDY, FULLY and SUNNY, and most of them have been very difficult. How difficult? Well, if you include FUZZY – which has an average score of 5.1 – those 13 have needed 4.6 guesses each to solve. That's higher than the average for ER words, though admittedly from a much smaller sample size.
Obviously the repeated Z makes it harder still. As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, Z is the fourth least common letter in the game, ahead of only X, Q and J. There are a mere 40 Zs spread across the 2,309 original solutions, with five of them appearing in double form, leaving a total of 35 games in which one or more Zs appears.
BLAZE, back in November, was the last one, and before that we've had 19 others: ZEBRA, GLAZE, AZURE, FROZE, TOPAZ, KAZOO, JAZZY, PLAZA, UNZIP, MAIZE, WALTZ, BOOZE, PRIZE, GAUZE, ZESTY, CRAZE, BOOZY, DOZEN and CRAZY.
JAZZY is the only previous answer to feature two Zs, and unsurprisingly that was also a toughie; that had an average of 5.5. FUZZY is slightly easier, because that opening F is a lot more common than the J that started JAZZY. Small mercies, eh?
My task here was not helped by my start word, PLANE, which gave me zero letters and left 378 answers. But thank heavens it wasn't more – the fact that I'd already ruled out five common letters at least kept my shortlist in three figures, and WordleBot's CRANE was only slightly better at 356.
I followed up with STORY, correctly guessing that if there was no N or E, the last letter would probably be a T, R or Y. The latter of those turned green, so I was on my way at least.
WordleBot told me afterwards that I now had 27 words left, but it felt like more at the time. I came up with 19 of them, including FUZZY, and decided to play CHIDE in order to rule out one of the two remaining vowels, plus three other likely consonants.
This was mostly successful, in that it left seven answers compared to the six that the 'Bot's best guess, MIDGE, would have provided – but seven is a lot to work through when you're already three guesses in and with only one letter on the board.
Still, I knew what the seven were (even if I didn't know at the time that there were seven): MUMMY, YUMMY, FUZZY, BUGGY, MUGGY, BUZZY and GUMMY.
I knew MUMMY and BUGGY had both been past Wordle answers, so discounted those, and worked out that if I played GUMBO next I would be certain to solve it in five. Well, so long as I hadn't missed any options.
I hadn't. When only the U turned green I knew that the answer had to be FUZZY, and played it next for a hard-fought five.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh? It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free. Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak. The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. 1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green. 2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray. 4. Answers are never plural. 5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green. 6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance. 7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode. 8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle. 9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone. 10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However… 11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.What is Wordle?
