Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge launch live: all the Unpacked news as it breaks

It's nearly time to meet the newest member of Samsung's Galaxy S25 family, with the reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge expected at today's virtual Galaxy Unpacked.

The phone was first teased back in January, but Samsung has yet to spill all of the details on this new flagship device, beyond the fact that it will have a 200MP camera.

But we do know it will be well worth waiting for, because the S25 Edge promises to open a new chapter in Galaxy smartphone design, given that it will surely be the slimmest phone it has ever made.

Hello! Managing Editor Roland Moore-Colyer here to take you through the run up to the second Samsung Galaxy Unpacked of 2025.

Unusual for Samsung, this Unpacked is taking place a lot later in the day than usual. Perhaps this is down to the showcase expected to be small and short.

Ultimately, we’re only expecting to see the Galaxy S25 Edge at this Unpacked and nothing more. So that might explain why Samsung isn’t making this event one that’s at a reasonable time for most of its key markets.

The lowdown

So what’s the lowdown with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge then? Well in simple terms the phone will be a slimmed down version of the Galaxy S25.

Its size looks set to sit between the base Galaxy S25 and the Plus model. While its main concession to slimness appears to be the removal of a rear camera, meaning the Edge will have two rear snappers. The good news here is that the main camera is tipped to sport a 200-megapixel sensor.

Powerwise, the Galaxy S25 Edge is tipped to use the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset as its stablemates. What’ll be interesting here is if the slim chassis affects performance, as less thickness means less space for heat to dissipate when a chip is being pushed.

But I suspect Samsung may have done some clever stuff with cooling and vapour chambers to ensure the Snapdragon chip doesn’t melt in a silicon sweat.

So while I’m talking performance, I guess that includes battery life. I’ll be intrigued to see if Samsung has made a slim phone that doesn’t compromise on battery capacity.

Perhaps the South Korean tech giant may have used some form of split-cell design to keep the phone’s overall body slim but still ensure there’s plenty of electrical juice for it to sip for at least a day’s worth of use.

Slim and sophisticated?

You might be asking why we need a slim take on the Galaxy S25? Well I’m partially with you, as it’s not like the current phones are bulky; even the Galaxy S25 Ultra feels like it has modest girth for a phone of its size.

But as someone who’s heading to a wedding in the next couple of days, I do like the idea of a very slim, and hopefully light, phone that can slip into a suit jacket pocket and not bulk it out.

Leak ahoy!

Right let's dig into some rumors and tips.

First off. yesterday we saw a Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge leak showed off the phone's design and a potential price.

From a screen grab of a retailer who seemingly put its listing of the Galaxy S25 Edge online prematurely, we got a look at the phone, which looks largely unchanged from its debut earlier in the year, and spied a price tag of £1,099 (about $1,465 / AU$2,275).

Now that's a punchy price tag for phone that doesn't sport as many cameras as its standard stablemate. I'd suggest taking this 'leak' with a dose of skepticism.

Over a grand for a phone that perhaps takes away more than it gives might be a hard pill for consumers to swallow.

Smartphone prices have creeped up as they've got more sophisticated, but one you go past the $1,000 / £1,000 your device better offer some strong value.

Then again, the Galaxy S25 Edge could have a lot of cutting-edge (pun intended) tech inside it to make a slim flagship phone.

So perhaps there'll be people who'll pay for the privilege of using sophisticated tech... I may be one such person!

Looking at some of the leaked images of the Galaxy S25 Edge and how it's tipped to have new cases, the phone could be designed more for people who care about the aesthetics of a mobile device over its capabilities.

Could this see a return of the 'fashion phone'? Maybe...

While I'm on the topic of the Galaxy S25 Edge's design, I'd be curious to see how tough the phone will be.

I have vivid memories of people bending and breaking iPhones back when the (kinda) current design language was established and some folks felt the phones weren't tough enough.

A previously claimed price leak has the 256GB Galaxy S25 Edge set to cost $1,678.99 Canadian dollars, while a 512GB model will set you back $1,858.99.

So that also tracks with other nuggets of pricing information, which isn't the best news for prospective owners of the Galaxy S25 Edge.

Going back to my ponderings over the Galaxy S25 Edge potentially being a bit of a fashion-forward phone, I wonder if Samsung will use actor Sydney Sweeney in this Unpacked.

I could see a super-slim phone going quite well with a small purse to accompany a Met Gala dress.

A quick look at Sweeney's Instagram show no hint of her traveling to a Samsung event; she's previously posted images of her Unpacked journeys.... maybe she's not euphoric about launch.

Right let's move on from the design and discuss some other rumors.

Two's company...

Reputable leaker, and likely thorn in the side of big tech firms, Roland Quandt, has the Galaxy S25 Edge tipped to come with a 200MP f/1.7 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide with a 120-degree field of view and no OIS.

It also reportedly has a 12MP f/2.2 front-facing camera.

Not a bad combo of cameras, though I prefer a telephoto camera over an ultra-wide one but I'm likely in the minority there.

Quandt has also claimed the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge has a 3,900mAh battery, wireless charging, and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Neither are bad specs, but that battery size could be a tad small given the chip the Edge is likely to have. Of course, Samsung could have worked hard at battery efficiency to ensure the phone can get through a day of use.

On the topic of the battery, I'd be curious if the Galaxy S25 Edge has any changes to its charging; maybe to save space it ditches the coils needed for wireless charging, Or perhaps a new way of approaching battery packaging means faster charging for the S25 Edge.

Titillating titanium

Another tip points towards the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge making use of a titanium frame. Now I'm a big advocate of titanium on phones, especially as it really does make them tough. So using the metal on a slim phone makes a lot of sense.

It could also go some way to explaining the rumored price tag of the Galaxy S25 Edge, as titanium is more costly than stainless steel.

I wonder if Samsung will use the launch of the Galaxy S25 Edge as a way to showcase some more Galaxy AI features.

I suspect not, as the company will likely do that when the rumored Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 get launches, likely in July.

When it comes to Galaxy AI, I recently wrote that I think more AI could transform the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 from what could be a ‘meh’ into a ‘hell yeah’ of a folding phone.

My logic here is that AI baked into a phone's operating system could see it do a lot more in a slicker and more intuitive fashion.

It would be a bit too much to hope that for the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is very likely to have all the AI features of the main Galaxy S25 family, only with whatever updated those smart tools have had since launch.

Time for a different perspective than mine: freelancer Max Slater-Robins is excited for the Galaxy S25 Edge but does have concerns over the trade-offs needed to make phones slim.

"The potential reinvigoration of overly thin smartphones is interesting because, if we’ve learned anything from past design trends, it’s that thinner doesn’t always mean better – and it rarely comes without trade-offs," he wrote.

"There’s only so much internal space you can sacrifice before doing so starts to impact the experience in meaningful, everyday ways."

A little question that popped into my head is how well will the Galaxy S25 Edge handle gaming?

The Galaxy S25 Ultra and its stablemates are fine gaming phones thanks to their powerful chips and cooling systems. The S25 Edge is tipped to have the same chipsets but being slimmer might have a bigger challenge of handling heat dissipation; my guess is Samsung might have applied some smart approaches to cooling.

Cool on the colors

Something that's left me a tad cold is a claimed leak of the Galaxy S25 Edge's colors. There appear to be three of them: a light blue/silver, white/silver, and black/grey.

Those shades don't exactly set my pulse racing. But I guess they are in keeping with the sleek aesthetic the Galaxy S25 Edge is going for. Maybe there'll be more colors after the phone launches via Samsung's online store.

Your move Apple?

With Samsung seemingly leading the charge on the slim flagship phone, the question of how Apple could and would respond is on my lips.

We've already heard plenty of murmurings about a so-called iPhone 17 Air, which looks set to be a slimmed-down version of the next iPhone.

Equally, Apple tends to tread its own path, which is probably why we've not seen a foldable iPhone yet. So maybe the crew at Cupertino won't be influenced by what Samsung does this year.

As my colleagues have taken us through today, the focus here will be on the Galaxy S25 Edge, which Samsung first teased back in January at Unpacked after unveiling the rest of the S25 family. This device should complete that lineup for now, offering a premium, ultra-thin smartphone.
