T-Mobile has launched a free beta trial of its new satellite-to-cell messaging service. This new T-Mobile service is developed in partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink. The idea of this service is to eliminate mobile dead spots by allowing users to send text messages via satellite connectivity. This makes it incredibly useful and potentially life-saving in areas without cellular coverage.
At the moment, the beta trial is limited to text messaging, but it’s free. However, T-Mobile plans to introduce support for limited multimedia and select apps upon full launch of the service this summer. After the trial period ends in July, T-Mobile customers can continue using the service for $15 per month. Those who took part in the beta will enjoy a discounted rate of $10. It is also open to non-T-Mobile users at $20 per line. If you’re a subscriber to T-Mobile’s Go5G Next plan, you will receive the service at no additional cost.
The service is compatible with most smartphones released in the past four years. This includes phones made from Apple, Google, Motorola, Samsung, and REVVL. Users can sign up via T-Mobile’s website if they’re interested in participating in the beta.
The concept of satellite communication via our smartphones isn’t new. We’ve seen more handset makers introduce support for the feature. The goal is to provide users with an alternative means of communication during emergencies. Granted, this is a situation we hope most people don’t find themselves in, but it’s good to know that it’s available should the need arise.
