TikTok is once again available for download on Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store in the US, following a brief removal triggered by regulatory scrutiny. According to a report from Reuters, TikTok is now available for download in the US.
At the start of the year, TikTok was pulled from US app stores amid rising concerns from government officials regarding data privacy and security. The US government was concerned about national security and whether TikTok was collecting data on users in the US and sending it back to China.
This ultimately led to a decision where TikTok had to either sell itself to a US company or face being banned. The company decided to pull its services in the US offline ahead of the ban. App stores like the Apple App Store and Google Play also delisted the app. US President Donald Trump later stepped in and gave TikTok a 75-day reprieve, but the app was still missing from app stores.
TikTok did give users a way to download the APK directly from its website. However, we imagine that not everyone knows how to sideload Android apps or feel safe doing so. With the return of the app to app stores, users who didn’t download the app or deleted it will be able to get it from official channels once again.
Keep in mind that TikTok isn’t out of the woods yet. It got a reprieve but if the company doesn’t sell itself or find a way to appease the US government, it could eventually get banned once again.
