The iPhone 16e isn’t a particularly impressive handset, and for its specs, it’s not cheap either. However, what makes the iPhone 16e interesting is that it is the first iPhone to use a custom modem made by Apple. Apple is now working on an updated version of the C1 modem, which is tipped to support mmWave 5G.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple isn’t rushing to create a C2 modem just yet. Instead, the company is working on a refreshed version of the C1, where one of the notable upgrades is support for mmWave 5G. Kuo says that support for mmWave wasn’t very challenging to begin with. However, Apple has to balance performance with power consumption.
Apple’s iPhones have been criticized over the years for its lackluster battery, so releasing a modem that makes battery life worse is not a good idea.
So, why does this matter to you? 5G is a term used to described the overarching technology. However, 5G is broken down into sub-6GHz and mmWave. They’re both complementary technologies designed to work together. Sub-6GHz provides a wider coverage, while mmWave offers faster connectivity. Technically, they could exist without each other, but when combined, it makes 5G more effective.
That said, if you’re interested in Apple’s first step into custom modem technology, the iPhone 16e is available now with this upgrade. While it may not be the most exciting iPhone release, it could offer a glimpse into Apple’s long-term 5G ambitions.
