Google announces Android Show I/O Edition ahead of developer conference

Google has a lot to say about Android — so much that it’s getting a head start. The company just announced The Android Show: I/O Edition, a virtual event happening on May 13th at 10AM PT / 1PM ET. This is a week ahead of the I/O 2025 main event. You’ll be able to stream it on YouTube or watch it directly on the Android website.

The show will feature Sameer Samat, Google’s president of Android ecosystem, and will deliver a wave of updates before the main I/O conference kicks off a week later on May 20th.

Honestly, it’s not a huge surprise. Over the years, Google has spent less and less time on Android during the I/O keynote, shifting more attention to AI projects like Gemini. Setting up The Android Show: I/O Edition probably means we’re about to get a heavy dose of AI news at the main event — and maybe even some updates on Project Astra.

In a teaser message, Samat said, “We’ll be sharing news now to get you ready for I/O where we’ll have even more special announcements and surprises in store.”

Google confirmed that Android will still have a presence at I/O itself, including keynotes and developer-focused sessions.

The Android Show: I/O Edition will be a pre-recorded broadcast streamed through YouTube Live. Google says the event is designed to give Android fans and developers a deeper look into how their Android experiences are evolving — something many have been asking for at past I/Os.

It sounds like this new format could stick around if it works out. Either way, it’s clear Google has more Android updates than it can cram into the main keynote this year.
