When the first Google Chromecast hit the market, it was kind of revolutionary. As long as your TV had a HDMI port, you could basically stream content from a phone, tablet, or PC onto it. However, it looks like that era has come to an end. According to a report from 9to5Google, Google has stopped selling the Chromecast with Google TV accessory.
This shouldn’t come as a total shock. Google already said back in 2024 that it would continue to sell the device until all inventory had been depleted. Now, according to the report, both the 2020 4K and 2022 HD models are no longer listed on the Google Store. You might be able to find some via third-party retailers, but if you wanted an official channel, you’re out of luck.
The fact that Google kept the Chromecast around for as long as it has is actually surprising. Back when the first Chromecast launched, smart TVs were still a rarity. These days, most TVs come with smart functionality that offers streaming capabilities, rendering devices like the Chromecast obsolete.
Google has since pivoted in its strategy. Last year, the company unveiled the successor to its Chromecast series in the form of the Google TV Streamer. This device is more than just about entertainment. Users can obviously use it to access their favorite streaming services, but it also acts as a hub for your smart home devices.
It is about twice as expensive than the previous Chromecast models, but with its expanded features and functionality, it could be a better choice for some users.
