After a series of delays, Microsoft is broadly releasing its flagship AI-powered features for Copilot+ PCs, aiming to deliver on a vision unveiled nearly a year ago.

It’s part of a larger effort to reinvent Windows around artificial intelligence. The update will roll out over the next month via the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update, the company said in a post Friday morning.

The features include Recall (in preview), which allows users to visually scroll through a timeline of past activity — including apps, websites, and documents — or search for content using natural language.

Two other key AI features in the update are improved Windows Search, designed to make it easier to find files and settings without remembering exact names; and a preview of new “Click to Do” shortcuts that offer quick actions like summarizing, copying, or editing on-screen content.

The features are only available on Copilot+ PCs, a new category of Windows devices with neural processing units (NPUs) designed to run AI models locally.

The rollout of Recall was delayed amid privacy and security concerns after its initial unveiling. Security experts raised concerns about the feature’s ability to automatically capture screenshots in the background.

The response prompted Microsoft to make Recall an opt-in experience and add stronger privacy controls, among other changes. The company says data is stored and processed locally, not sent to the cloud or shared with Microsoft.

The Recall feature was first made available in preview to Windows Insiders in November 2024. Today’s news marks its broader rollout to all Copilot+ PC users.

During the 2024 holiday quarter, 15% of premium-priced laptops sold in the U.S. were Copilot+ PCs, according to Microsoft. The company says it expects the majority of PC sales over the next several years to shift to the Copilot+ category.

Separately, a new report by the tech newsletter Newcomer says Microsoft’s Copilot consumer AI chatbot has plateaued at around 20 million weekly users, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT has soared to 400 million weekly users, underscoring the challenges facing Microsoft’s AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman.
