Today's Wordle answer (game #1365) is… LADLE.
Another day, another Wordle with a repeated letter. But this is far harder than yesterday's PIECE.
LADLE currently has an average score of 4.1 – making it the equal toughest (with MANGO, NAVEL and GREED) since the 2nd of March (on the first day of the month we had the horrifically difficult HOVER, with an average of 4.7).
It certainly caused me some problems, and I had to settle for an unsatisfactory five, just as I did with GREED. The issue here was that I simply didn't think of LADLE as an option until too late.
And why would I? The LADLE is arguably the least important member of the kitchen utensils drawer, after all. It only gets uses rarely, for soups and casseroles, and the rest of the time just lurks at the back, only popping up when you're searching for a spatula or wooden spoon.
My start word didn't help, either. I began with TRUCK, which would have been very useful a few days ago when the answer was TRACK, but which today gave me zero letters and left 800+ possible solutions for the third day in a row.
I followed up with PLANE, and that was a lot better. In fact, it gave me two yellows and a green, and cut the shortlist to 13.
Well, according to WordleBot. The problem was that my own list contained eight: SALVE, FALSE, VALVE, HALVE, AISLE, AGILE, FABLE and GABLE. The ones I missed were SABLE (unlikely), EAGLE (likely – but it's been a past Wordle answer), AMBLE (likely), ADDLE (seems unlikely) and LADLE (which was the answer, of course).
I based my third guess on my list, and came up with VANGS. I have no idea what that means, but Wordle accepted it, and it did the trick of reducing those 13 words to a pair: FABLE and LADLE.
Unfortunately, I still hadn't thought of the latter, so played FABLE and was horrified when only three letters turned green.
At this point I was in a bit of a panic. I had two guesses left and for all I knew there might be dozens more words that fit. But after an exhaustive search I came up with LADLE, and was able to escape with a five.

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1364, too.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1364) was… PIECE.
One day I will return to a fixed start word and, boy, will that be a relief. If I was playing solely to get the best score I would, of course, be doing that now; I'd use one of the best Wordle start words, probably SANER for the ER ending and the fact that it hasn't yet been a solution.
But instead, I torture myself with random start words, mainly to keep the game fresh and also because it gives me something to write about here. After all, if I always scored a two or three it would get a bit dull for everyone, you included.
My random word yesterday was MURKY, which left 973 possible solutions, following the 897 left by Thursday's fluid. That is not good luck. In fact, WordleBot awarded it a luck score of only 14 out of 99.
Worse was to follow. For my second guess I played SALET – a word which some mathematics geniuses once determined was the best of all start words. I've never used it before, but rather than go with the obvious SLATE I thought I'd shake things up a little.
SALET was an "excellent choice" – 99 out of 99 for skill – but even less lucky. In fact, the 'Bot awarded it only 3/99! I'm not sure I've got a result as low as that before.
SALET gave me a yellow E but nothing more, and left 47 words still. Given that the 'Bot was down to 11 after its first word, CRANE, I was at a distinct disadvantage and through no fault of my own.
The third guess was on me, though. I figured that the E would go at the end, with a few consonants in front of it and either I, O or a second E before that. After much deliberation I went with WINGE, but the likes of HINGE or NICHE would have been better.
Still, WINGE gave me two greens, and reduced the shortlist to a trio of PIECE, PIXIE and DIODE. I never considered the latter two, so went with PIECE and scored a four that was both lucky and unlucky.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh? It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free. Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak. The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. 1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green. 2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray. 4. Answers are never plural. 5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green. 6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance. 7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode. 8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle. 9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone. 10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However… 11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.What is Wordle?
