OPPO Find N5: The world’s thinnest foldable phone makes its debut

OPPO is back at it again, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in foldable tech. The OPPO Find N5 isn’t just another upgrade—the company is redefining what a foldable phone should be. Lighter, thinner, more durable, and packing some serious hardware, this is the foldable that might finally make skeptics take the plunge.

Thinner Than Ever

Let’s get straight to it: the OPPO Find N5 is the world’s thinnest book-style foldable. At just 8.93mm when folded and an absurdly slim 4.21mm when open, it’s closer in feel to a traditional smartphone than ever before. For context, that’s almost as thin as a USB-C port—so yeah, OPPO isn’t playing around. It also makes it thinner than the HONOR Magic V3, which prior to this sat at the top with a thinness of around 4.4mm.

When it is folded shut, it is slightly thicker compared to a typical smartphone at 8.93mm. However, it isn’t that much thicker to the point where you might complain about how thick it is. In fact, it is about 0.7mm thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a good 3mm thicker, so that’s how thin we’re talking about.

It’s also ridiculously light at 229g, making it one of the easiest foldables to carry around. That’s lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and only slightly heavier than a standard smartphone phone. In other words, this is a foldable that won’t feel like a brick in your pocket.

A Hinge Built to Last

Durability has always been the Achilles’ heel of foldables, but OPPO is tackling it head-on with its Titanium Flexion Hinge. The company claims that the hinge is made from aerospace-grade Grade 5 titanium alloy. This makes the hinge 36% more rigid while being 26% smaller. This is one of the changes that allowed OPPO to create that ultra-thin profile without compromising durability and strength.

The inner screen gets a major boost in toughness, too—OPPO says it’s 70% more shock-resistant than before. With an IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 rating, it’s also the first foldable to withstand everything from splashes to high-pressure water jets. Personally, given how expensive foldables are in terms of repair, I’m not sure I would want to put it through its paces. However, if you are prone to clumsiness, know that the Find N5 should be able to withstand some hits here and there if you absolutely have no choice.

Displays—Outshining the Competition

OPPO is taking things to the next level with the Find N5’s upgraded screen protection. The massive 8.12-inch inner screen features what the company is calling a Dual Shielded Flexible Screen. It is made from a custom elastomer material that improves its effectiveness at absorbing impact.

And then there’s the crease—or lack thereof. OPPO has already been a leader in this space, but the Find N5’s crease is now 50% shallower and 10% narrower than its predecessor, putting it ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which still struggles with a visible crease.

It also boasts a pretty bright display. The Find N5’s outer display reaches a peak brightness of 2,450 nits, making it one of the brightest phone displays ever, only slightly behind the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 2,600-nit cover screen. But where it really pulls ahead is the inner display, which hits 2,100 nits—higher than both the iPhone 16 Pro Max which managed 2,000 nits and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 at 1,750 nits.

Flagship Performance, No Compromises

Under the hood and powering the Find N5 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. This makes it the first foldable to feature this powerhouse chipset, beating competitors like Samsung to the punch. Users should be able to expect up to 45% better CPU performance and 40% better GPU performance, all while being more power-efficient.

Pair that with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage; this foldable is an absolute beast. Whether you’re gaming, multitasking, or editing 4K videos, the Find N5 won’t break a sweat and will eat up everything you throw at it.

However, do take note that the Snapdragon 8 Elite in the Find N5 is the new seven-core variant. This means that this version has one less performance core compared to the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite. In real-world use, we doubt that you will be able to tell the difference.

Cameras: A Hasselblad-Approved Shooter

Foldables have historically struggled in the camera department, but the Find N5 brings some serious firepower. It features a Hasselblad Master Camera System, which includes a:

  • 50MP Main Camera (1/1.56-inch sensor, f/1.89, OIS)
  • 50MP Periscope Telephoto (3x optical zoom, 6x lossless zoom, AI-powered 60x zoom)
  • 8MP Ultra-Wide (116° FOV, autofocus)

New AI-powered features like AI Telescope Zoom enhance long-range shots, while Lightning Snap ensures moving subjects stay crisp. Portrait fans will love the Hasselblad Portrait Mode, which mimics Hasselblad’s professional cameras’ natural bokeh and lighting effects.

We are quite excited to try it out ourselves. The OnePlus Open blew our minds at how capable foldable phone cameras can be. Since the OnePlus Open was based on the OPPO Find N3, we expect the Find N5 to carry forward similar, if not better, camera performance.

Companies like Samsung are seriously lacking in this area when it comes to foldables. Samsung’s foldable cameras are passable, but by no means would we go as far as calling them amazing. The OnePlus Open, on the other hand, was truly spectacular, so hopefully, the Find N5 will carry on that legacy.

Battery That Lasts Longer Than Any Foldable

Battery life has always been another pain point for foldables. It’s not surprising since the batteries are required to power two displays—one outer display and one larger inner display. It’s like powering a smartphone and a tablet at the same time. However, with the Find N5, OPPO found a way to cram in a 5,600mAh Silicon-Carbon battery, the largest ever in a book-style foldable. The company claims that this should result in:

  • 25 hours of video streaming
  • 8.6 hours of Zoom calls
  • 7 hours of gaming

And when it’s time to charge, 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging fills it up in under 50 minutes, while 50W AIRVOOC wireless charging keeps things cable-free. Keep in mind that the OPPO Find N5 does not support Qi2 officially. This means that those hoping to take advantage of the magnet technology of Qi2 will need to buy a separate MagSafe/Qi2 case. The upside is that the 50W wireless charging makes it a lot faster compared to Qi2, so it’s a trade-off.

Final Thoughts

We’ve seen many foldable phones make their entrance over the years. However, the OPPO Find N5 isn’t just another foldable—it’s probably one of the most refined ones to date. With its ultra-thin design, titanium hinge, flagship performance, and battery life, this might be the first foldable that feels like OPPO refused to compromise on.

Whether you’re a foldable veteran or a first-time buyer, the Find N5 makes a strong case for why the future is foldable. It remains to be seen if these specs and features can truly deliver what OPPO is promising, and more importantly—will it be enough to dethrone Samsung’s dominance? That remains to be seen.

The OPPO Find N5 is available in a Misty White or Cosmic Black finish. It is available for purchase on the 28th of February where it will be priced at SGD2,499 (~$1,800).
