The Pixel 9a is Here, but the 8a Remains the Better Affordable Option

Google’s new Pixel 9a comes with some much-welcome features like the newer Tensor G4 chip, a large battery and bright display, and while it’s an ideal upgrade for people who are looking to switch over from much older devices, we can’t help but feel that its 500-dollar price tag might be a bit expensive despite its status as a lower-end device.

This is where the Pixel 8a comes in – despite being a year older than the 9a, the Pixel 8a still comes with some worthwhile features, and given that it’s now a lot cheaper than when it first launched, it might be the more practical phone to go with. For one, Google launched the 8a with up to seven years of software updates, so if you decide to get one today that leaves more than half a decade’s worth of support if you’re planning on keeping the phone for a long time.

While it comes with an older Tensor G3 chip, the Pixel 8a is generally smooth for everyday usage, and most users will have little to no problems using the 8a as, well, a smartphone. Sure, the Tensor G4 inside the Pixel 9a is newer, but in terms of performance there’s not much of a big difference. It’s also hinted that unlike the regular Pixel 9 models, Google is using an older modem for the Pixel 9a which is a bit of a bummer, especially in terms of battery life.

Additionally, the Pixel 8a’s camera performance is also one of its biggest highlights – it’s a simple setup, but Google’s computational photography allows the 8a’s dual-camera system to shine, and camera features such as Portrait Mode and Night Sight make for some great point-and-shoot photography. Like the Pixel 9a, there’s also support for video recording at 4K resolution at 60fps, and a host of AI-based photo functionality.

With all that being said, the Pixel 8a still presents as an ideal midrange Pixel device, as it comes with a ton of upgrades over the Pixel 7a, while being considerably cheaper versus the still-new Pixel 9a. Of course if you simply must have the newest model, then by all means go for the 9a, but you’ll definitely save a lot more with the 8a.
