Wordle hints (game #1407) - clue #1 - Vowels

How many vowels does today's Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1407) - clue #2 - first letter

What letter does today's Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today's Wordle answer is C.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it's the second most common of all, behind only S.

Wordle hints (game #1407) - clue #3 - repeated letters

Does today's Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle hints (game #1407) - clue #4 - ending letter

What letter does today's Wordle end with?

The last letter in today's Wordle is H.

Today's Wordle answer (game #1407)

  • NYT average score: 3.6
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot's score: 3
  • My start word performance: VISTA (142 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot's start word performance: CRANE (14)

Today's Wordle answer (game #1407) is… CLASH.

We've had a tricky few days with OZONE, GENIE and yesterday's KNOWN, so today's CLASH offers a welcome respite with none of the challenges found in those games.

That means no repeated letters, no uncommon letters, no rare KN combinations at the start… just some of the most frequently used letters in the alphabet, in places where you'd generally expect them.

It does have one complication, admittedly; the fact that -LASH could also be FLASH or SLASH, C-ASH could also be CRASH, and CLAS- could also be CLASP or CLASS. All of those words were played in huge numbers today, to the extent that on the third guess more than 20% of Wordlers went with one of those options.

Despite that, it has a low average score of 3.6. The performance of some of the best Wordle start words will have helped here; CRANE left 14, STARE left 16 and SLATE reduced the shortlist to seven.

I managed to score a second successive three despite a far worse beginning. And again, I owed that result to a massive dose of good luck.

It came on my third guess today, rather than on my second as it did yesterday. My opening VISTA left 142 words, and my follow-up of SANER was unlucky and still left 17.

(And yes, once again my hunch that it would be an ER word was incorrect. When are we going to get another one? There are 141 of these among the 2,309 original solutions, and we've had 84 so far. So there are 57 left to come in about 900 games – or one every 15.8 days. And the last one we got was 38 games ago! We are well overdue now. Surely it will be tomorrow. And then maybe we'll get three in a row. Something to look forward to, eh?)

I didn't come up with 17 answers, nowhere near it. But then I didn't try. Instead, I saw that CLASH, CLASP, FLASK and FLASH were all options, and decided to go with CLASH simply because The Clash are my favorite ever rock band. And, well, I knew it was a good narrowing-down word too – but then so would any of those have been.

Amazingly, it turned out to be the answer – which equated to a 96 luck score, according to WordleBot. Then again, it was also a 99 skill score, so maybe I deserved that luck. Either way, I'll take it.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1406)

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1406, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was K.

K is not a common starting letter in Wordle by any measure. In fact it ranks 22nd out of 26; a mere 20 answers begin with a K.

  • There were repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was N.

N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it's the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

  • Yesterday's Wordle answer is generally recognized.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1406)

  • NYT average score: 4.2
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot's score: 4
  • My start word performance: TORUS (152 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot's start word performance: CRANE (81)

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1406) was… KNOWN.

Oh silent K, how you confuse poor, unsuspecting Wordlers.

There are 10 of these among the 2,309 original solutions in the game, and KNOWN is the eighth; previously we've had KNOLL (which appeared before WordleBot existed, so I don't have an average score), KNOCK (3.6), KNEEL (4.3), KNELT (4.0), KNEAD (4.0), KNAVE (4.1), KNACK (4.0).

KNOCK is the outlier there; I don't know why people found that easier, but that one aside they have all been 4.0 or above. KNOWN continues that trend, coming in at a tricky 4.2 at the time of solving.

To complicate matters, it also has a repeated N – so there's no shame if it took you five or six guesses to solve it. (Not that there should ever be shame for needing extra guesses to solve Wordle, of course, but you know what I mean).

Amazingly, I scored a three and beat WordleBot despite a pretty poor first guess. However, that was almost entirely due to luck.

My opener was TORUS, a lovely word, but not particularly helpful. It gave me a yellow O, but nothing more and left 152 possible solutions.

I never expected to turn that result into a three, but the Wordle gods had other ideas for me. I played CLONE as a good narrowing down word, nothing more, and it turned the O green and gave me a yellow N to go with it.

Initially, I thought there would still be a handful of answers left, or maybe even as many as a dozen – but despite spending ages looking, I could only see KNOWN.

I played it more in hope than expectation, but all five letters turned green, and when I consulted WordleBot later it confirmed that KNOWN had been the only solution left to me – meaning I'd gone from 152 to 1 in one guess. Nice!

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
